Nowadays, scientific articles and theses are often published under CC, or Creative Commons, licenses. What do they mean? How do I choose the right license for my own work? How should I handle, for example, images made by others in my own work? What rights do I give up as an author?

What rights do I have as a user of someone else’s work? Am I allowed to modify it — for example, translate the text into another language?
